Swanny was elected to Parliament when I was in year 8 at North Rockhampton High School. As a kid I remember my parents talking about what a great local member this bloke from Brisbane was. Watching him bring his community together with events like ‘Welcoming the Babies’ was the example of what I thought a politician should be.
The next time Wayne came into my consciousness was during the Global Financial Crisis. No-one should underestimate the herculean efforts that kept Australia from recession, efforts that protected the well-being of my family, friends and everyday Australians. He also built halls in all the schools my mum taught at, including New Farm State School. Mum says thanks.
Wayne is retiring from parliament, but it’s clear his work isn’t done. I couldn’t count the number of times I heard him speaking on TV or quoted in a newspaper addressing the one issue I believe is fundamental to our party – inequality. We will never be a country at our best until all Australians, regardless of the postcode they were born in or the school they went to can make the most of their talents. There is no greater flag-bearer for addressing inequality than Wayne Swan.
I’ve made up my mind, but if you haven’t made up yours, my friend, Anne Fuchs is hosting a function at her house in Toowong with Swanny on Saturday 28 April at 3:30 pm. Send me a message if you’d like to come!
I’m supporting Swanny! Read More
